Chronic Productive Cough

Today we discussed a case of chronic cough, we discussed the most common causes of chronic cough as well as how our differential changes when the cough is productive.

-What are the 3 most common causes of a chronic cough?  If you are the first to comment with the answer you will win a Starbucks gift card!

-When the cough is productive we expand our differential to include chronic bronchitis, bronchiectasis and smoking.  When diagnosing bronchiectasis the gold standard is diagnosis with a non-contrasted CT scan.

The causes of bronchiectasis are very broad, and can be found in a great review by Dr. Barkers in NEJM.  However the broad categories include postinfectious conditions, congenital conditions, immunodeficiency, toxic inhalation and rhematic conditions.
