Today we discussed unintentional weight loss and dysphagia. 3 learning points include:
1. 3500 calories = 1 lb of weight loss as a general guide
2. Choroidal melanoma is a rare form of melanoma that despite local control has a high rate of metastasis at 5-10 years post diagnosis. It has tropism for the liver. Therefore, it requires surveillance with LFTs and imaging at least annually.
3. Suspect oropharyngeal dysphagia and have excluded systemic processes (i.e. CNS, metabolic causes) --> refer to ENT for nasoendoscopy to evaluate for structural causes of dysphagia.
