Chronic Cough

Today we talked about a patient with chronic productive cough found to have ground glass and tree-in-bud opacities in the lower lobes.

1) Differential diagnosis of tree-in-bud:

                Bronchopneumonia (RSV, Mycoplasma, Adenovirus)

                Aspiration

                Diffuse Panbronchiolitis

                ABPA

                CF

                Asthma

                Organizing Pneumonia

                Endobronchial spread of TB

                MAI

2) In the workup for chronic cough the most common etiologies are Asthma, GERD and Upper Airway cough syndrome.  However, in patients that are smokers or who are immunosuppressed you may need to obtain imaging.
