Autoimmune Hepatitis

We discussed a great case of autoimmune hepatitis.  During this discussion we thought about causes of a hepatocellular distribution of LFT abnormalities and about the testing characteristics of the antibodies in autoimmune hepatitis.

1.       When thinking about a hepatocellular pattern of LFT abnormalities consider the following; Viral hepatitis, autoimmune hepatitis, DILI, toxins, NAFLD, ischemic, budd-chiari, hemochromatosis, alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, Wilson’s, celiac sprue.

2.       Autoimmune hepatitis is seen in women 4:1 ratio, in middle age.  It is associated with other autoimmune diseases, most commonly autoimmune thyroiditis.
