Team-Based Learning (TBL) Conference Series

Over your residency, some of your noon conferences and outpatient educational sessions will be designed as Team-Based Learning sessions. TBL is a structured, collaborative instructional method based on the Flipped Classroom model and pumped up with fun activities ;-)  . TBL is formatted into 3 key events

Preparation (aka pre-work)

Readiness Assurance (aka quiz and discussion)

Application (aka cases)

Along with the key events, the sequence within these events is very scripted as well. First you answer the question posed (whether it be the online quiz or in class) individually, then discuss in your group to come to one agreed upon answer (consensus) then discuss between groups to defend your answer. You will follow this format for each question and case led by your instructor. The reason for this is by committing to an answer you raise the stakes. Then by defending your answer, you grapple with the content and engage creating lasting memories. This is in essence, active learning, which we know to be much more effective than passive learning.

So, what do you need to do????

BEFORE CONFERENCE

1. Access the prep slides and review (These can be found here)

2. Then take your Individual Readiness Assurance Test (IRAT

3. Complete the IRAT before Conference (no time will be given to complete in conference)

DURING CONFERENCE

4. In conference - discuss your answers and come to consensus for each question. This is known as the GRAT or Group Readiness Assurance Test (Same quiz, different name!)

5. Defend your GRAT answers amongst other groups

6. Move on to Application Exercises once you have debriefed the GRAT

We are very excited and hope you enjoy. Please let us know any and all feedback - our goal is to develop a learning curriculum for you that is effective, efficient and enjoyable

AFTER CONFERENCE

1. If you would like to review any of the prior TBL's go to medhub and you can find the material under the conferences section.
